Got the blues? Beat them with the greens!
According to researchers at the University of Essex in England, just five minutes of an outdoor activity or exercise can bring about a strong shift in mental health, improving both mood and self-esteem. Every green environment, from city parks to towering mountains, brought about positive returns. Outdoor environments involving water brought even greater improvements in self-esteem and mood. Aren’t you glad you live in Florida?
Take 5 minutes outdoors for yourself today. Ride your bicycle down Bayshore Blvd., weed a patch of your garden, or simply take a quick walk around your neighborhood. Whatever green activity you choose, the benefits will be worth it! “This study confirms that the environment provides an important health service,” researchers wrote. “We believe that there would be a large potential benefit to individuals, society, and to the costs of the health service if all groups of people were to self-medicate more with green exercise.” (Joanna Barton, PhD) Good old Mother Nature! She may be all the medicine we need!
