Are you a vegetarian, or on the path towards becoming one?

Well, that would put you into a category with over six million Americans who abstain from eating meat, fish, and poultry.

People choose to become vegetarians for many reasons. Some do it because they simply do not like meat. Others have strong personal convictions about the treatment of animals. And still another category of vegetarians choose a meat-free lifestyle for the health benefits!

According to Harvard Women’s Health Watch, “Traditionally, research into vegetarianism focused mainly on potential nutritional deficiencies, but in recent years the pendulum has swung the other way, and studies are confirming the health benefits of meat-free eating. Plant-based eating is recognized as not only nutritionally sufficient but also as a way to reduce the risk for many chronic illnesses.”

The list of chronic illnesses that can be prevented through a vegetarian diet include:

  • heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • certain types of cancers
  • high cholesterol
  • elevated blood pressure

Individuals who do not consume meat tend to have lower LDL cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and a lower, overall, body mass index.

However, simply avoiding meat is not the ultimate “cure-all”. Though it may be vegetarian, eating Fettuccine Alfredo for dinner every night is NOT going to help your cholesterol! A well-balanced diet consisting of mostly plants (fruits and vegetables), whole grains, beans & legumes. is the real key to health!

Join us this week as we navigate our way through the Vegetable Patch and enter a world of vegetarian eating, the Clean Plate way! And, check out our Recipes Page for some healthy, vegetarian recipes!

The Soy Story….

There is a lot of controversy regarding the relationship between soy and breast cancer. Does soy increase the body’s production of estrogen, thus causing an increased risk of developing breast cancer?

To answer this question, we turn to Taste for Life editorial advisor Tori Hudson, ND.:

“There is little clinical evidence linking soy to an increased risk of breast cancer in healthy women or to a worsening prognosis of breast cancer patients. Among women with breast cancer, the most recent data has been extremely strong and consistent that soy food consumption is associated with decreased risk of recurrence and death. For primary breast cancer prevention, including daily soy foods in the diet of young women before puberty has the strongest implication for reducing one’s risk.”

Be Aware….

We are wrapping up our week of breast cancer prevention tips.

So far, we have covered these important tips for preventing breast cancer:

  1. Exercise
  2. Eat a Mediterranean Diet
  3. Take Your Supplements

Tip #4 is something you can spread to your friends and family members and is the best method of survival.

Breast Cancer Prevention Tip #4:

  • Awareness- Early detection is the best method to long-term survival if you develop breast cancer.

Know your family medical history and risk factors, and follow medical guidelines to catch any abnormalities as soon as they occur.  All women need to remain aware, but those with a family history need to be ever more vigilant.

Be proactive and follow these steps:

The American Cancer Society recommends having clinical breast exams at least every 3 years when you are between the ages of 20-39, and annual, or bi-annual, mammograms starting at age 40.

Some controversy has arisen in recent years regarding mammograms. Women should discuss their options with a trusted healthcare professional.

“When you do nothing, you feel overwhelmed and powerless. But when you get involved, you feel the sense of hope and accomplishment that comes from knowing you are working to make things better.”

Sip and Shrink….

Many of us are in a constant battle with our waistlines.

But, did you know, what you drink may aid you in achieving your weight loss goals?

Numerous studies have shown green tea to increase metabolism and reduce body fat!

Green tea contains catechins (polyphenols with strong antioxidant and antibacterial properties), caffeine, and calcium, which when consumed in tandem help increase energy expenditure by about 4.6% over a 24-hour time period. According to the authors of the most recent study, ” Such modifications are sufficient to prevent weight gain…. When consumed regularly as part of a healthy diet and exercise regime, such a beverage may provide benefits for weight control.”

A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition concluded that drinking four coups of green tea or taking an equivalent dose of green tea extract per day “significantly decreased body weight and BMI (Body Mass Index)” in obese people with metabolic syndrome.

In addition to aiding in weight loss, green tea has been found to lower cholesterol, control blood sugar, and prevent cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.

If you are worried about the caffeine content of green tea, this information is for you!

Green tea does contain caffeine, but only half as much as coffee. In a recent study, it was found that drinking decaffeinated green tea was also associated with weight-modulating effects. Daily ingestion significantly slowed the rate of weight gain in subjects prone to obesity.

Rollin’ Oats carries both loose leaf and green tea bags in a variety of flavors, as well as green tea extract supplements.

Following advice to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful rays, Americans have created another problem…..

Vitamin D deficiency!

No one wants to be deficient in anything, but what makes Vitamin D so important? What does it do? Why do I need it?

Vitamin D is a little known powerhouse of a vitamin. It reduces the risk of developing diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and cancer!

But that’s not all folks!

Vitamin D contributes to stronger bones, a longer, overall lifespan, AND is an excellent way to rev up your immune system and prevent influenza!

Dr. John Cannell, MD, president of the Vitamin D Council, states, “Scientific evidence shows that achieving adequate vitamin D status reduces your chances of contracting influenza, and if you do get the flu, it will be less severe if your vitamin D levels are higher.”

Studies have also linked vitamin D to weight loss. A report published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found the more vitamin D circulating in a person’s bloodstream, the lower a person’s body weight.

Dr. Cannell recommends up to 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily for adults. This should be achieved through a combination of sun exposure, food, and supplements.

Good food sources of vitamin D include:

  • fish
  • milk
  • eggs
  • cheese

So make yourself a Smoked Salmon & Goat Cheese Omelet…

…and head down to Rollin’ Oats for a vitamin D supplement!

The practice of yoga is more than just learning to bend like pretzel.

It is about breath and the synchronization of that breath to the body’s movements. Yoga builds long, lean muscles, teaches balance in both mind and body, and has been found to have another surprising benefit.

Studies, by researchers at Brown University, found the practice of Vinyasa yoga to be very effective in treating depressed patients who were not responding well to medication. At the end of an eight-week period, “participants exhibited significant decreases in depression symptoms and significant increases in an aspect of mindfulness and in behavior activation.”

So next time you are feeling “ugh” pull out your mat and say a few “ohm”s!

You will exercise your mind, body, and soul!

That’s a much better method for coping with stress than reaching for a pint of ice cream!
