We have all heard the term GMO, and lately, it has been popping up in the news and online more than ever.
GMOs are Genetically Modified Organisms that have been created in a laboratory through genetic engineering. By splicing together the DNA from different species of fruits and vegetables, scientists are creating new strands of organisms that are resistant to pests, bigger, and cheaper to produce. While this all sounds honky-dory, we need to look at the bigger picture. Genetic Engineering is a relatively new science. We are unsure what impact these laboratory created foods will have on our health in the long run.
In 30 other countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions and bans on the production of GMOs, because they have not been proven safe. Why, then, has the US approved commercial production of them for US foods?
So, how present are GMOs in the US. As of a 2009 study, 80% of packaged foods found in an average grocery store in the US and Canada contain Genetically Modified Organisms.
